Grant-making Conference in Canada

In November 2008, six members of the Youth Philanthropy Project were able to attend an International Conference on Grant-making in Montreal, Canada. There, they conversed with other youth groups from around the world to learn more about grant-making and bring positive feedback for the group at home.

Megan Reilly, a junior at Monacan High School, reflects:

“I will never forget our trip to Montreal! It was an amazing experience, and I think everyone really enjoyed it. We learned a lot about other youth philanthropy groups, and met interesting people from a variety of cultures. It was great to explore many different aspects of philanthropy by attending seminars and listening to speakers. However, our weekend was not all work and no play... we got to tour the city, hear live music, go shopping, and even eat at a traditional Canadian restaurant - who knew Canadian food was so good!”

The whole group on the night out!

When asked what their favorite part of YPP was this year, its no surprise that most of them had to include the trip to Montreal. The girls had a great time, learned a lot, and brought back new ideas for the upcoming year. What's ahead for the YPP?

Frances Russell, junior at Monacan High School
"Some of the groups in Canada had follow-up surveys for their grant recipients. We'd like to have follow-up site visits to make sure our money is going its farthest and reaching the most people."

Casey Cordrey, senior at Maggie Walker Governor's School
"I like the idea of using subcommittees for service projects/organization and fund development."
